Intertwined Vase by studio Drag And Drop is an aesthetic exploration at the intersection of traditional ceramic craft, digital design tools and 3d printing. Separate volumes twist and intersect to form a unitary biomorphic shape resembling tree roots and barks. The vertical directionality and the slender figure of the vase are as much a design choice as they are informed by the constraints of the fabrication method.
The natural clay is prepared by hand for perfect consistency and fed into a clay 3d printer cartridge. After the clay is laid into shape layer by layer by a 3d printer, it is let to dry for a few days. Skilled artisans make the final touches by hand before bisque firing the vase. After the bisque firing is complete, natural wax is applied as a mask to separate the glazed shiny interior from the matte exterior. The final step is the glaze firing at 1250 degrees Celsius, forming the tough watertight ceramic.
