The harmonious circular shape and very low installation height make the minimalist SLICE² PI Ceiling ceiling light by designer and co-founder of serien.lighting Jean-Marc da Costa a universal lighting solution for all requirements of modern architecture. With three sizes and four housing colors as well as versions with or without indirect light for ceiling illumination, a wide range of options is available. The luminaire, which has already won two design awards, can also be combined with free-standing and table luminaires with the same design language and lighting technology.
Minimalist archetype with a clear profile
With the design of the SLICE² PI Ceiling luminaire, serien.lighting presents an independent and sophisticated interpretation of an archetype in terms of lighting technology. A completely homogeneously illuminated, filigree disc that appears to float below the ceiling - minimalist and striking at the same time. The designer Jean-Marc da Costa, one of the two founders, who still runs the company today together with designer and co-managing director Manfred Wolf, describes his motivation for the design: “SLICE² PI Ceiling is a technologically sophisticated and creatively independent reinterpretation of an archetypal luminaire.
Every detail is minimal and legitimized by its function. However, with the shadow gap or optional light gap to the ceiling, the SLICE² PI Ceiling still has an unmistakable look. This challenge was particularly appealing to me.”
As with all designs, serien.lighting attaches great importance to elegant and clear proportions. The circumferential housing ring is extremely delicately dimensioned, just enough to give the illuminated glass panel the necessary visual support. The precisely manufactured aluminum ring also serves as a cooling surface for the LED modules. Depending on the color scheme - bright chrome-plated, matt black, matt white or in the new Crémant color - the outer ring of the SLICE² PI Ceiling appears either prominent or discreet. The luminaires can be arranged individually, in a grid or playfully in free clusters of different sizes, subtly enriching the architecture.
The independent, minimalist design of the luminaire family has already been awarded the prestigious German Design Award 2024 and the Focus Open 2023 in gold.
Complex lighting technology for glare-free illumination
The luminaire's lighting technology was developed with the same care. The complex design creates glare-free, perfectly homogeneous illumination without visible hotspots and enables the flat and elegant housing proportions. The light from the LEDs is fed laterally into the edge of the Light Guide Prismatic (LGP) and evenly coupled downwards over the surface by the specially calculated laser engraving. The uniformly diffuse light is subsequently effectively glare-reduced by the microprismatic layer. The upper end is formed by a reflector so that the entire light can be used in the direction of radiation. However, a variant can be selected in which a small amount of light is deliberately emitted towards the ceiling. This equally homogeneous ceiling illumination makes the luminaire appear to float.
The lower cover lens made of toughened glass protects the optics, reduces dust build-up and makes cleaning easier. With its outer ring only 30 millimetres high, the luminaire remains very flat regardless of its diameter.
With three diameters (170, 225 and 353 millimetres) and connected loads between 13 and 22 watts, SLICE2 PI Ceiling can cover a wide range of applications. A combination with the SLICE² Floor free-standing luminaire or the SLICE² Furniture table luminaire, which can be integrated into office desks, makes it possible to implement a consistent concept in terms of design and lighting technology.
The luminaires are designed to be extremely easy to install. In the first step, the ceiling-side housing element with integrated control gear is attached, followed by the tool-free fixing of the luminaire unit using the bayonet principle. Thanks to the encapsulation of the luminaire, no dust can penetrate. The Model L also has an invisibly integrated presence detector that automatically switches the luminaire on and off or activates the pre-programmed corridor function.
