Das Fellowship-Programm am Bauhaus Erde bietet aufstrebenden Talenten die Möglichkeit, vorhandenes Wissen zu erweitern und Praktiken für eine nachhaltige Architektur der Zukunft voranzutreiben. Die verschiedenen Fellowship-Projekte erproben neue Formen der Praxis, des Engagements und des Wissens in Bezug auf die sich verschiebenden natürlichen und disziplinären Grenzen in unterschiedlichen Geografien und Kontexten.

Durch Projekte, die technische Aspekte mit räumlichen und ästhetischen Qualitäten der gebauten Umwelt verbinden, identifiziert BE-FELLOW neue, kraftvolle Architektursprachen für eine nachhaltige gebaute Umwelt. Das Programm bietet den Stipendiaten den nötigen finanziellen Spielraum, professionelle Betreuung, ein Netzwerk und ein Umfeld, in dem sie ihre vielversprechenden Ideen und experimentellen Designansätze verfolgen können. Jedes Projekt bringt eine einzigartige Konstellation von aufstrebenden Akteuren, Materialherstellern, Bauherren, Planern, Forschern, projektspezifischen Partnern, Experten, Studenten und lokalen Interessengruppen zusammen. Gemeinsam schaffen sie neues Wissen über regionales, regeneratives und zirkuläres Bauen und überbrücken die Kluft zwischen institutioneller Forschung und Baupraxis.

BE-FELLOW ist eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen den gemeinnützigen Organisationen Bauhaus Erde und Experimental.

Material Cultures ist eine gemeinnützige Organisation, die gegründet wurde, um Design, Materialforschung und strategisches Denken auf hohem Niveau zusammenzubringen, um sinnvolle Fortschritte auf dem Weg zu einer postkohlenstoffhaltigen gebauten Umwelt zu erzielen. Sie arbeiten an der Schnittstelle von architektonischem Design, Ingenieurwesen, Systemdenken, digitalen Technologien und Materialwissenschaft, mit dem Schwerpunkt auf regenerativer Materialbeschaffung und Kreislaufwirtschaft.

„KONSTRUKTIONSLAND BERLIN/BRANDENBURG“
In ihrem BE-FELLOW-Projekt baute Material Cultures auf der Methodik ihrer laufenden Forschung zu nachhaltiger Forstwirtschaft und regenerativem Landmanagement in Großbritannien auf. Das Projekt untersuchte das Potenzial der Wiedervernässung von Mooren in Brandenburg für die Produktion von regionalen biobasierten Baustoffen. Das Projekt stellt die experimentelle Übertragung der zuvor entwickelten Methoden auf einen neuen politischen, klimatischen und kulturellen Kontext dar: vom Nordosten und Yorkshire in Großbritannien nach Berlin und Brandenburg.

Das Ergebnis des zweiphasigen Stipendiums ist der Forschungsbericht „Wetlands and Construction: An Opportunity for Berlin-Brandenburg“ sowie ein zweiteiliger Prototyp von 1:1-Gebäudefragmenten, der im Bauhaus Earth LAB unter Verwendung verschiedener Materialien aus der Paludikultur gebaut wurde.

Dieses Video dokumentiert die verschiedenen Prozesse hinter unserem ersten BE-FELLOW Material Cultures Projekt, einer Zusammenarbeit mit Bauhaus Earth and Experimental. Das Projekt untersucht die Beziehung zwischen Gewinnung und Produktion in Feuchtgebieten, mit besonderem Augenmerk auf Baumaterialien. Durch Interviews mit den Beteiligten, Feldforschung, Zeichnungen und Modellierung wurde das Potenzial von Materialien, die aus Feuchtgebieten stammen, untersucht. Die Ergebnisse gipfelten in einem veröffentlichten Bericht (EN/DE) und in der Entwicklung von Demonstrationsmodellen in Originalgröße. Diese Demonstratoren wurden von Material Cultures in Zusammenarbeit mit Buro Happold entworfen und in unserem LAB im Marienpark gebaut, wobei hauptsächlich Materialien aus Feuchtgebieten verwendet wurden.

The Fellowship Programme at Bauhaus Earth offers emerging talents the opportunity to expand existing knowledge and advance practices for a sustainable architecture of the future. The diverse fellowship projects test new modes of practice, engagement, and knowledge in relation to shifting natural and disciplinary boundaries across different geographies and contexts.

Through projects that combine technical aspects with spatial and aesthetic qualities of the built environment, BE-FELLOW identifies new, powerful architectural languages for a sustainable built environment. The programme provides fellows with the necessary financial freedom, professional mentorship, network, and environment to pursue their promising ideas and experimental design approaches. Each project brings together a unique constellation of emerging actors, material manufacturers, builders, planners, researchers, project-specific partners, experts, students, and local stakeholders. Together, they produce new knowledge on regional, regenerative, and circular building, bridging the gap between institutional research and building practice.

Project Text

Material Cultures is a non-profit organization founded to bring together design, material research, and high-level strategic thinking to make meaningful progress towards a post-carbon built environment. They work at the intersection of architectural design, engineering, systems thinking, digital technologies, and material science, with a focus on regenerative material sourcing and circular economies.

«CONSTRUCTIVE LAND BERLIN/BRANDENBURG»

In their BE-FELLOW project, Material Cultures built off the methodology of their ongoing research on sustainable forestry and regenerative land management in the UK. Their project investigated the potential of rewetting peatlands in Brandenburg for the production of regional biobased building materials. The project represents the experimental transfer of the previously developed methods to a new political, climatic, and cultural context: from the North-East and Yorkshire in the UK to Berlin and Brandenburg.

The two-phase fellowship resulted in the research report “Wetlands and Construction: An Opportunity for Berlin-Brandenburg” as well as a two-part prototype of 1:1 building fragments built at the Bauhaus Earth LAB using various paludi-culture based materials.

This video documents the various processes behind our first BE-FELLOW Material Cultures project, a collaboration with Bauhaus Earth and Experimental. The project investigates the relationship between extraction and production within wetland landscapes, with a special emphasis on construction materials. Through stakeholder interviews, fieldwork, drawing, and modeling, the research delved into the potential of wetland-sourced materials. The findings culminated in a published report (EN/DE) and the creation of full-scale demonstrators. These demonstrators were designed by Material Cultures in consultation with Buro Happold and constructed at our LAB in Marienpark, primarily using materials sourced from wetlands.
