St. Agnes Church in Berlin's Kreuzberg district was built by architect and Senate Building Director Werner Düttmann in 1964-67. The ensemble, which has been largely preserved in its original condition and is a listed building, consists of the church building with sacristy, chapel and tower, the former community center and a kindergarten. For the conversion of the former parish center of St. Agnes into a cultural center, all rooms were converted and prepared for various users such as an architectural office, a café, a gallery, a publishing house and classrooms for the art students of New York University NYU. There are also two apartments in the ensemble.
The existing church was converted into a gallery. Minimal interventions characterize the adaptation. To gain exhibition space, a "concrete table" was built into the existing nave, generating a showroom on the ground floor and a new exhibition space on the upper floor, which is accessed via the tower staircase. The entire facade, consisting of the listed exposed concrete surfaces and a sprayed concrete render, was extensively renovated. All measures were planned and carried out in close coordination with the upper monument protection authority in Berlin.
