Fjordenhus is the first building designed by artist Olafur Eliasson and architect Sebastian Behmann with Studio Olafur Eliasson. Located in the harbor basin of Vejle, Denmark, Fjordenhus creates an impressive new connection between the fjord and the city center. Accessible via a pedestrian bridge, the 28-meter-high building is placed directly in the water. The building form is based on a geometry of four intersecting cylinders from which further volumes have been removed by subtraction, creating generous façade openings, incisions and terraces. The complex wall surfaces with convex and concave curvatures, elliptical shapes and arches are made of brick masonry. In the wild bond, "voids" of special shaped bricks were incorporated, and the exterior facades have color gradients between green and blue. The building envelope, normally the membrane between inside and outside, in Fjordenhus consists of spaces and allows to be inside and outside at the same time. The floor plans with circular and elliptical rooms vary on each floor. The building is furnished with artworks and furniture by Olafur Eliasson. Both these installations on the double-height public first floor and in the office spaces above, as well as the architecture, make Fjordenhus tangible as a sculptural presence in the harbor.
