The student village Frankie & Johnny is being built in Berlin's Treptow district from around 400 modules stacked into three elongated bars. Made of COR-Ten steel, the overseas containers, which are pushed slightly outward and inward, create a striking, playful architecture and generate a lively and diverse place for a new form of communal living.
The High Cube Containers 40', with an exterior dimension of 12.19 m x 2.90 m, are prefabricated as a modular system. The units can be interconnected to form majority single, double or triple units. At the heart of the ensemble, between the building sections, students can linger on ground-floor seating podiums or converse on the arcade galleries. The communicative in-between zone is a place of encounter and exchange that also serves as a communal balcony.
The compact buildings divide the site into two open spaces of different character. In addition to the activity and sports areas, there is a green oasis with meadows and trees. The café on the first floor represents the central meeting point of the complex. The name Frankie & Johnny is representative of the students from all over the world who live together in this unique place in Berlin.
