Olympic & Paralympic Sport Shooting Arenas, London
In the summer of 2012, the Royal Artillery Barracks site in London hosted the Olympic and Paralympic competitions in 10m, 25m and 50m sport shooting. The three sports venues are temporary and mobile. Sport shooting is one of the Olympic disciplines in which the result and course of the competition are barely visible to the human eye. The design for the shooting sports facility seeks a concise form of expression for the dynamics and precision that the sport requires. The three halls are wrapped in crystal white membranes and littered with boldly colored dots that softly bulge outward spatially. The protrusions structure and animate the facades, which are up to 107 m long, and act as tension rings to tighten the membrane skin. In addition, they serve as natural ventilation and lighting and as entrances to the buildings. Daylight shimmers through the semi-transparent membranes into the interior of the buildings. The lightness of the double-curved facades with their bold color dots gives the event a festive and contemporary look.
Al Qasba Theater, Sharjah
The Al Qasba is the cultural center of the Arab Emirate of Sharjah. Two 150-meter-long, four-story buildings on opposite banks of the Quasba Canal house galleries, cinemas, stores, restaurants and offices. The "Eye of the Emirates" Ferris wheel on the northern building tower is Sharjah's landmark, visible from afar. The Masrah al Qasba Theatre is the venue for a number of important cultural events such as the annual Sharjah Film Festival. magma architecture has been commissioned to redesign the multifunctional event hall with adjoining foyer and ancillary spaces. The design dresses the hall in a textile, wave-like surface reminiscent of a dune landscape. The waves are enveloped in soft light that emerges from the troughs of the waves. Air-conditioning, sound and additional lighting technology are invisibly integrated into the ceiling, controlling the acoustics of the hall. The seats are covered in a similar sand-colored textile, creating a space that continuously envelops the visitor.
