Description:
Urban Reef posits a new paradigm for urban ecosystems, one that dissolves the dichotomy between human-built environments and natural habitats. Created through an interdisciplinary approach that merges computational design with 3D printing and ceramics, this installation serves as both a conceptual framework and a functional model for bio-inclusive urbanism.
The Reefs are 3D printed, utilizing a composite of environmentally conscientious material —clay— to produce structures of varying porosity and bio-receptivity. These features are not merely aesthetic but serve specific ecological functions: the promotion of microclimates, absorption of water and shelters for a range of species.
By integrating elements of design, technology, and ecology, Urban Reef challenges conventional perspectives on urban planning and sustainability. The creation of such multi-species habitats is not only feasible but essential for the future well-being of both human and non-human inhabitants of urban landscape.
