A novel building material is being created from hop production waste: the binder-free hop acoustic panel. The panels are made from 100% hop fibers, which are broken down using a specially developed chemical process. This activates the plant's natural binding agents—lignin and pectin—so that no additional synthetic resin is required. The material holds itself together.
The panels combine acoustic effectiveness with a visible, warm materiality, turning the agricultural by-product of hop cultivation into a resource for interior design. After use, they can be completely recycled.
The project was developed by onmatter, a climate tech start-up from Munich that emerged from research at the Technical University of Munich. The aim is to embed bio-based materials in regional value creation systems – from the field to the surface.
